How to register as a domestic employer on uFiling
These steps follow the UIF's own uFiling user manual. You will need your ID number and your worker's ID number, start date and wage.
- Go to ufiling.labour.gov.za and click Register. Accept the terms and conditions.
- Complete your details. The UIF verifies them and sends an activation link by email or SMS.
- Activate the account, log in with the temporary password, set a new password, and answer the security (vetting) questions.
- Under registrations, choose Domestic employer and click Register. You can register as a domestic employer only once with your ID number.
- Confirm your employer status and complete your personal and contact details.
- Add your worker: enter their ID number and click Retrieve, then capture their details, employment information and salary.
- Add at least one beneficiary for the worker and submit.
- The Department emails you a UIF reference number once the registration is processed.
- Each month, open the Declarations Manager, check the declaration that uFiling prepares from the salary you captured, then submit and pay.
You can also register by phone on 012 337 1680, by email to [email protected], or at a labour centre, and then link the UIF reference number to a uFiling profile.
Keep the declaration accurate
uFiling builds each month's declaration from the employee details you captured, so update the salary when it changes and record the end date when the worker leaves. The worker needs a correct record to claim benefits.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to register my domestic worker for UIF?
Yes, if the worker works for you for more than 24 hours a month. This includes part-time workers who come once or twice a week.
How much is UIF for a domestic worker?
2% of gross pay: 1% deducted from the worker and 1% paid by you, on pay up to R17 712 a month. At the 2026 minimum wage for a 40-hour week that is about R52.40 each a month.
Do I pay UIF to SARS?
Not usually. SARS says employers who are not registered for PAYE or SDL pay UIF contributions to the Unemployment Insurance Commissioner, which for a household means declaring and paying on uFiling. If you are registered with SARS for PAYE, UIF goes on your monthly EMP201 instead.
What if the worker works for several households?
Each employer for whom the worker works more than 24 hours a month registers separately and pays UIF on the wages they pay.
What does my worker get from UIF?
The UIF pays unemployment, illness, maternity and adoption benefits to workers who qualify. The worker applies to the UIF (online through uFiling or at a labour centre), not to you.
