What a domestic worker payslip must show
Sectoral Determination 7, clause 6, lists what the employer must give the worker in writing every payday:
- Employer's name and address
- Worker's name and occupation
- Period for which payment is made
- Worker's wage rate and overtime rate
- Number of ordinary hours worked
- Number of overtime hours worked
- Number of hours worked on a Sunday or public holiday
- Worker's wage
- Details of any other pay
- Amount and purpose of any deduction
- Actual amount paid
How the amounts are worked out
- Ordinary pay = hourly rate × ordinary hours. Leave Sunday and public-holiday hours out of this figure.
- Daily wage = hourly rate × normal hours in a day, with a minimum of 4 hours.
- Overtime = hours × 1.5 × hourly rate.
- Sunday = the greater of hours × 2 × rate (or 1.5 if Sunday is a normal workday) and the daily wage, per Sunday.
- Public holiday worked = the greater of 2 × daily wage and daily wage plus the hours worked, per holiday.
- UIF = 1% of gross pay deducted from the worker, plus 1% paid by you, on pay up to R17 712 a month.
Deductions you may make
You may deduct only what the law allows: UIF, up to 10% of the wage for accommodation that meets SD7's standards, repayment of a loan or advance (no more than one-tenth of the wage on a payday), and other amounts the worker has agreed to in writing. Breakages and losses cannot simply be deducted.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to give my domestic worker a payslip?
Yes. Sectoral Determination 7 requires a written payslip every payday, showing the employer and worker details, the period, rates, hours, pay, deductions and the amount paid. You must keep a copy for three years.
How is overtime paid?
At least 1.5 times the normal hourly rate. At the minimum wage that is R45.35 an hour. Overtime is only by agreement, up to 15 hours a week and 12 hours in a day including overtime.
What do I pay for Sunday work?
Double the hourly rate for each hour, or 1.5 times if Sunday is one of the worker's normal working days. If the worker works a short Sunday shift, pay at least the normal daily wage.
What do I pay on a public holiday?
If the holiday falls on a normal workday and the worker is off, pay the normal daily wage. If they work, pay at least double the daily wage. Work on a public holiday must be agreed.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The payslip is calculated and turned into a PDF in your browser. Names and amounts are not sent to us, saved in cookies or added to the page address.
